Racing Weekend equates to business lessons
One summer weekend last year, I was at the race track. Traveled to the track Wednesday night, worked remotely Thursday – aka “hung out” and got set-up for the weekend. Thursday was a test day for the participants. The plan was to work grid over the weekend – meaning my duties started Friday morning. Meeting new people, learning about the organization and spending time with like-minded people was exciting; as well as reconnecting with past connections.
Wednesday upon arrival, and throughout Thursday, I did just that. Met a few of the organizers and other workers; reconnected with several people from my past; met new drivers, friends and workers. Overall, it was an amazing day – a much needed break from “office work”.
Then things went sideways …
There was a major accident at the end of the front straight in the last session towards the end of the session. Ambulances dispatched, fire bottles used, ensuing “chaos” to outside observers. Once the smoke dissipated, and the adrenaline started to fade, the realization the event chair/coordinator was in the car started to settle into the paddock.
And the show must go on …
Accidents happen. When you are the race driver, you know the risks each time you strap into the driver’s seat. You’re well aware of the dangers – and opportunities – each time the engine starts. Fortunately, this driver was well prepared and survived the crash with broken ankles, lacerations and bruises – and no burns. Thank you modern technology, quick response and preparation of all. Having seen the aftermath of the accident, and ensuing fire – it was a miracle he had no burns. His quick mental capabilities and ability to stay calm in such a horrific event saved his life.
There are all kinds of support around the track at all time – just like in business. You’re never alone. In this case, the management of the event needed help. The drive and event chair wanted the event to still happen. So – as they say – the show must go on. And it did.
Many people pitched in. Several people changed what they were doing for the weekend by taking on more tasks. I was asked to “help” with registration. The last time I helped at registration was prior to all the event info being online. A bit daunting… and exciting. Quite a shift from what I was planning to do…. which was play in traffic.
